Slaters 50/50 Restaurant in Pasadena (Review)

by Philippa Lane

If you like bacon, then this is the place for you.

I don’t eat bacon for reasons that I will not go into now, but I know that there are many people that do.  In October, my editor and I attended the grand re-opening of Stater’s 50/50, which is located in the heart of prestigious Old Town Pasadena, California. In the Old Town area, there are many places to park, but it is metered or paid parking.  You can also walk, drive, take a bus, or ride a Metro Bike to get to the restaurant.

The Slaters 50/50 Restaurant in Pasadena is owned by Ted Cutting and even though the menu is the same as most of the other locations, there are some new items that have been added to the menu.  I have never eaten at a Slater’s 50/50 Restaurant, before attending the event, so it was a very new experience for me. We arrived at the restaurant around 5:00 pm and were greeted by a friendly hostess who directed us to the area near the bar. All members of the media were directed to this area. There is also another area where people can play games such as ping pong as well as some other games.

They do serve alcoholic beverages, but since my daughter and I do not drink alcohol, we chose to have a delicious ginger beer which is made with natural ingredients and is made by Fiver Tree.  It is the best and strongest ginger beer that I have ever tasted and I highly recommend it.  A waiter came by to see if we wanted anything and gave us a menu and many people were still arriving, so we sat there looking at the big screens that were situated over the bar area. Then Mr. Ted Cutting came over to us and introduced himself. He was very pleasant to meet and talk with and told us about the new menu items and many new and exciting things that were taking place each day at the restaurant, such as Express Lunch, in which they offer a designed burger combo or one of their Slater’s Salads.  Monday is Plant Night where you can learn about making plants a hobby. Tuesday is Taco Tuesday when all tacos are handmade and only $1.50 each.  There are also other events that are happening during the rest of the week that are worth taking a look at.

The area where we were sitting in had many televisions and the music was very loud, which made it very difficult to hear each other over all of the noise, but it was quieter on the other side of the restaurant, away from the bar area.

I was disappointed that their famous burgers were not being offered in the VIP Room which is their signature item. I was told via email before arriving to the restaurant that the dinner was complimentary. I mentioned this to two servers and both of them needed to talk to the owner about it, which I thought the owner had already instructed his servers that the invited guests would not need to pay for their dinner.

I did give a tip because I had ordered a coffee and my editor who is also my daughter ordered a Graceland Shake and the waitress supplied excellent service. The sweet potato fries, chips, and regular fries with turkey chili and cheese sauce that was located in the VIP Room, did not need require a tip. These were the food items available for members the media in the VIP Room, but the plates provided were very small and I could not fit enough food on them.  I should have asked for a bigger plate, so that I would not have needed to make multiple trips to the VIP Room.  We were shown examples of their tacos in the VIP room, but they were only for display. Again, as I previously mentioned, there were no samples of their famous burgers in the VIP Room for the media to try. We did enjoy the sweet potato fries, cheese sauce, and turkey chili, which tasted fresh and was flavorful and filling. I think that the event could have been better organized, but I do believe that it was still a successful event.  I recommend visiting Slater’s 50/50 in Pasadena.  The sweet potato fries are fantastic!
